ISOQOL’s education initiatives are open to anyone with an interest in the theory, methods, standards and best practices, or application of health related quality of life (HRQL) research. Members receive complimentary access to ISOQOL’s education library of past virtual symposia and select webinars. Additionally, ISOQOL offers an introductory online education course on PROs available for purchase.

Virtual Symposia

Formerly known as Measuring What Matters (MWM), the ISOQOL symposia program was established in 2016 as an in-person event. It was later made into a virtual event, hosted through ISOQOL’s online education program. Virtual symposia focus on specific/niche topics.

Online Education Course

For those looking to gain a better understanding of patient-reported outcomes (PROs), ISOQOL offers an introductory education course.

Introduction to Quality of Life and Patient-Reported Outcomes (IPRO Course)

Theory, Measurement and Applications

Collecting and acting upon Patient-Reported Outcomes (PROs) is one of the cornerstones of patient-centered care. PROs include symptoms, some aspects of function, health perception, health related quality of life and quality of life. Choosing the right set of PROs can be challenging as there are many options, each with advantages and disadvantages.

This intensive online course offers a curriculum that will provide a basic level introduction to the why and how of using PROs in research.

Intended Audience

This training is aimed at:

  • Health professionals
  • Medical scientists who are not experts in the use of PROs
  • Consultants
  • Pharmaceutical and medical device representatives
  • New investigators and research students
  • Policymakers
  • Other associations and individuals who are interested in acquiring familiarity with the PRO research terms and methodology
Learning Objectives
  • Identify the historical and conceptual framework of Patient-Reported Outcomes (PROs)
  • Identify the types of PRO measures
  • Review the purposes and applications of PROs
  • Gain knowledge on the key psychometric properties of PRO measures
  • To compare and contrast the main measurement approaches that apply to PROs
  • Gain familiarity with the basic steps in measure development
  • Discuss need for cross-cultural equivalence
  • Discuss the conceptual model of child health and illness outcomes
  • Review the rationale for implementing PROs in clinical practice
  • Comprehend approaches and pitfalls
  • Gain understanding of resources available to guide implementation
