Translation Difficulties Subgroup
The "Translation Difficulties" subgroup is led by Katrin Conway . The objective of this group is to create a list of good practices for questionnaire developers based on the review of common translations difficulties and proposed solutions of how to avoid them.
Main Objectives
- Collection of examples of translation difficulties
- Review of examples and Categorisation of difficulties
- Recommendations
Methods
- The collection of examples was organised with the collaboration of four teams of volunteer researchers from Germany, India (Hindi), Italy, and Russia.
- The review of examples and the categorisation of translation difficulties was performed by the chair of subgroup one, and submitted to the approval of the members of the Translation Difficulties Subgroup.

- Four Mini-Reports for the following languages: German, Hindi, Italian & Russian
- Poster presented during ISOQOL 12 th Annual Conference on “Review of the activities of Translation and Cultural Adaptation SIG”, San Francisco, USA, 2005.
- Poster presented during ISPOR 8 th European Meeting, Florence, Italy, 2005
- Presentation during QOL Research in Asia, Hongkong, China, 2006
Future Steps
- To enhance our review on the first 4 languages and publish the findings
- To expand our review to other languages
- To develop a list of advice for translators in specific languages
- To develop our list of "good practices"for developers of questionnaires
