Ambassador
Program
To foster the
international network of QOL researchers, we will offer an innovative
ambassador program. Local participants will be invited to be conference
ambassadors. If you wish, an ambassador will be assigned to you according
to your research interests and specialty, well before you arrive
Hong Kong. Your ambassador will be able to link you to local QOL
researchers and health organizations, and provide practical tourist
tips on what to see and where to dine and shop in Hong Kong, as well
as tourist options in Mainland China that may interest you.
Please indicate
on your registration form if you are interested in this exciting
new program!

Once
in Hong Kong
A variety of transportation options are available for people travelling
between Hong Kong International Airport and Hong Kong Island, Kowloon,
New Territories and Lantau Island: rail, bus, ferry and taxi services.
Operated by the MTR Corporation, the high-speed Airport Express rail
service takes passengers to Hong Kong Station in Central, via Tsing Yi
and Kowloon, about 23 minutes. The one-way adult fare from the airport
to Hong Kong Island is HK$100. Trains run every 15 minutes from 5:50am-1:15am
daily and free shuttle-bus services to major hotels are available for
Airport Express users.
There
are more than 30 franchised bus routes from the airport, including
nine Airbus services that have fewer stops than conventional buses.
Airbus fares range between HK$14 and HK$45. Ferry links between Chek
Lap Kok Pier and Tuen Mun Pier in the New Territories run from 6am-11pm
daily. Taxis to almost anywhere in Hong Kong are readily available
from the taxi pick-up area. A typical journey between the airport
and Central costs about HK$340; and Tsim Sha Tsui the fare is HK$270.

FAQs about Hong
Kong
Q:
What’s the weather like in Hong Kong?
A: Clear and sunny days are the norm in October. Short sleeves and light
jackets are most suitable at this time of year. The average temperature
ranges from 18oC-28oC (64oF-82oF), humidity about 72 per cent.
Q:
Do I need a visa to visit Hong Kong?
A: Visitors from most countries can enter Hong Kong without a visa for
periods of seven days to six months, depending on nationality. Check
with any Chinese embassy or consulate for the latest status.
Q:
Is local transportation easily accessible?
A: Public transportation via bus, ferry or train is efficient, relatively
inexpensive and user-friendly. The system covers extension areas of Hong
Kong with signs in English and Chinese.
Q:
How do I figure out the time difference between Hong Kong and my
home?
A: Hong Kong time is GMT plus 8 hours. So, if it is 2:00 pm in Hong Kong,
it is 2:00 am in NewYork, 7:00 am in Paris, and 5:00 pm in Sydney – all
on the same day.
Q:
Will I be expected to pay tips?
A: Most restaurants will levy a 10 per cent service charge but waiters
will expect to be given some loose change. Restaurants that don't add
a service charge will expect a 10 per cent tip. However, tipping is left
to your discretion. Bellboys, porters, restroom attendants and taxi drivers
will happily accept loose change.
Q:
What is the currency?
A: Legal tender is the Hong Kong dollar (HK$). There are 100 cents in
a dollar. Coins, issued by the government, are bronze-coloured for 10
cents, 20 cents and 50 cents; silver-coloured for HK$1, HK$2, and HK$5;
nickel and bronze for HK$10. Notes issued by HSBC and Standard Chartered
Bank have denominations of HK$10, HK$20, HK$50, HK$100, HK$500, and HK$1,000.
Q:
Will I be able to use my electrical equipment in Hong Kong?
A: Voltage in Hong Kong is 220 volts, so a transformer will be needed
to operate 100-volt appliances. Most major hotels provide hair dryers
and other amenities.
Q:
Is Hong Kong safe for the visitor?
A: Yes, Hong Kong is one of the safest cities in the world even at night,
when people may walk with confidence. All water direct from government
main meets the World Health Organisation standards, and bottled water
is widely available.
Q:
What is the shopping like in Hong Kong?
Hong Kong is the shopping window of the world. It is a haven for choices
- from fashion to furniture, from antiques to jewelery and from cameras
to computers. This range of choices extends to the shopping environment.
There are designer boutiques and street stalls, classic shopping malls
and frenetic markets, modern art galleries and antique shops, and they
are open every day of the week.
Q:
Is English widely spoken?
A: Very widely spoken. There will be no problems in communicating with
people in most hotels, restaurants and even some taxis.
